OVERVIEW

Dr. Patricia Hyer welcomed women leaders and honored guests during a special

evening reception the night before the conference.

During the evening reception, VA Network Executive Committee members honored women Presidents from Virginia institutions. From left to right: Dr. Patty Cormier, President of Longwood College; Dr. Jennifer Bratten, President of Ferrum College; Dr. Belinda Anderson, President of Virginia Union University; Dr. Ann Alexander, President of Wytheville Community College.

 

Dr. Tim Sullivan, President of the College of William and Mary, welcomed women from around the state.

VA Network Members at Lunch

Participants took advantage of the opportunity to network with women from other institutions. A lunchtime address was delivered by Dr. Judith Prince, Past Chair, ACE Network Executive Board, and Associate Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives,

University of South Carolina Spartanburg.

During the luncheon, Dr. Belinda Anderson, President of Virginia Union University, was recognized.

Panelists

Afternoon sessions included panel discussions covering topics such as pursuing advanced degrees, leadership, fund-raising, spiritual wellness, and risk taking.

Una Murphy, Associate Director of University Development, GMU and Christine Clark-Talley, Executive Director of Alumni Affairs, GMU provided insight into the skills necessary for development operations and working with external constituents.

Moderator, Carlane Pittman, Assistant Director of Graduate Studies, College of William & Mary, facilitated a panel discussion on pursuing an advanced degree. Panelists Debbie Clear, VP of Instruction/Student Services, VA Highlands Community College, Kristine Dahm, Graduate Intern, University of Virginia, and Miya Simpson, McNair Scholars Program Director, Virginia Tech shared their reasons for pursing doctoral degrees at different stages of their careers. They discussed the advantages of full- versus part-time study and ways to juggle personal, family, and professional responsibilities.

Brenda Williams, Associate Professor, School of Education, College of William & Mary, talked about spiritual wellness. The session emphasized the multiple strategies for nurturing one's spiritual life in the midst of competing demands.
